Californian Wonder Pepper

My CW's germinated ok......am I wishing the had not?..... it seems they are not that great from your posts....oh well
I have others growing too say maybe they will be better

I'm growing GOLDEN California Wonder...
...are there more CW varieties or is that it? It may be they aren't supposed to ripen to red.

I had terrible germination last year, but this year using sieve compost in an open flat and heated sporadically with my desk lamp I got great germination with all but one chili and one sweet variety. I'm starting to suspect duff seed.

Personally I don't rate Californian Wonder at all, tried them a few times but never had any luck. It's getting late for peppers now so I'd be inclined to look to buy some young plants from the garden centre in a bit. Strange you're having problems with Sunnybrook though, my seeds of that type are older than yours and all but one germinated back in January in a heated propogator.

I wonder if their demise was hastened by a move from a damp house to a very dry house a few years back.

Can I recommned the variety "Napia"?



I got them from Real Seeds last year.

I didn't sow them until April.
Then put them outside in containers.
- 2-leafed seedlings under little plastic cloches.

Not expecting much, I didn't really look after them much apart from some tomato feed when they were fruiting.
And I got a nice 2 or 3 tasty fruits off each one. Very worthwhile.

Saved seeds from one of the fruits. Sowed them in January and they're going well (much faster growing than the Purple Beauty and Chocolate Beauty I'm doing as well - and also germinated more readily).

If you want I can chuck some saved Napia seeds in an envelope.

I am on the sunny south coast, but Real Seeds are based in Wales so Napia should do ok in Kerry.

Thanks for the offer and the info, I'll deffo try them next season. I'm going to try these CWs and take it as a challenge - I've got a few Sunnybrook on the go and I will definately save seed from them all going well this year.

I've never managed to grow decent sweet peppers, CW were one of my failures.

Try Sunnybrook - actually got red ones in late August and gained a bit of confidence after years of failure.

I find them fairly reliable, I keep them in the greenhouse and last year used one of the Easy2Grow watering gadgets (see http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...ood_49790.html ) and had good results.

Real Seeds did have them but not at mo, perhaps if things work out with mine I can swap you for some of your Napia next winter

Aww Reading this is a bit disappointing, the majority of my peppers this year is californlia wonder

It's what I grow and I am sure you will be fine with them.

There does seem to be a lot of negativity surrounding this sweet pepper variety but it works for me and I'm north of Inverness so maybe it prefers the later start and longer summer daylight hours that it gets up here

Just wondering if you get much of the cloudy skies, cool, foggy and drizzle weather during summer that we get here - sometimes we don't get any sun for a week or so, although in 2008, we went practically the whole month of July without seeing the sun. I'd expect you'd get this on your West coast though don't know if you get it where you are.
