I wouldn't use hay, too much by way of grass seed in that.

I think with annual type weeds just hoeing them off when they're small is best , you just have to be careful to sow your veg. seeds in a recognisable line so you don't hoe them off too! For tougher weeds I just try & pull them up as soon as I can grab them, dandelions are a bit of a pain as they nearly always leave some root but you can add the leaves to salad.Into every life a little rain must fall.

I love this idea. Whereabouts in Manchester are you?
