long stalk on my Cabbages

Can anyone tell me why my cabbages have all gone leggy?
They have grown really long stalks and flopped over and laying on the ground and now only just beginning to fill the heads.

Could it be that they weren't planted deep enough? Brassicas are usually planted with their first pair of true leaves at ground level.

As sir snagde says they like being deeply planted into very firm soil

You haven't accidently planted cow cabbage then had some strong winds have you?

I have the same 'problem' with my cabbages - my summer/autumn cabbages were just fine, as always but my savoys are long leggy things and one has blown over (and the snails are enjoying the outside leaves). They were planted nice and deep on nice solid soil. They are heading up nicely, just lanky! They did the same last year (erm, except they didn't head up, just flowered in the spring ).

I put cabbages in last year and earthed them up like you do with potatoes. I had read this encourages strong root systems which help avoid them being blown over in the winds. It worked for me.

Only two of mine have long storks I think its because I've grown them too close to a wall, because those in the bed are doing fine.

Mine have gone like that and I know I didnt plant them firm enough, also my brussels have blown, again my mistake was not planting firm enough. I have had a few firm cabbabges though. The ones I planted a few weeks ago have been put in much firmer.

I have grown collards for the chooks this year. These are like heartless cabbages on the end of long stalks!
