I've lost the (garlic)thread ....

Earlier this year, there was an excellent thread about garlic. It had been started, I think, around this time last year, with garlic being planted (on/around the shortest day ?) and went through to the garlic will be ready to pick in 11 days exactly.

I've done a search, but came up with 50 pages of results. Can anyone remember the thread I'm on about? I'm trying to remember whether the shortest day is the traditional time to plant garlic.

Yes it is - or before!

However it isn't picked in 11 days - it's harvested on the longest day.

Thanks Zaz. When I said harvest in 11 days, I didn't think they took 11 days to grow (), I just remembered that the thread starter (was it your good self ?) had said 11 days to go - presumably this was 11 days before the shortest day then . And someone else on the thread was asked by someone when their garlic would be ready, and they were thrilled to be able to be so specific in their answer and startle them somewhat

People seem to get confused with this shortest and longest day theory and apply it to most alliums. It is shallots that are planted on the shortest day not garlic. Garlic needs a longer growing season and should be planted Oct time with a generous margin of a month either side. Many gardeners sow onion seed around the shortest day but they will be grown way past the longest day.

Actually, I found when I did my garlic trial that AS LONG AS they were planted by the shortest day - they would be fine to be harvested by the longest day.

In all fairness; if you plant garlic before then it will be fine, and after then it will still be fine, it will just take a little longer.

Hmm. I planted mine about a month ago (there's already hard frosts up here). Reaping depends quite a bit on the type doesn't it? I don't think I harvested any until late July, and some into the August.

Planted mine about a month ago as well but no signs of growth yet.?

Can't remember how long it took last year and planting cloves from that batch picked this summer.
