garlic question

My friend has given me some garlic. I dont want to put it in my free beds as I have plans for them and also do not have plans to plant other alliums due to mouldy nose!

Is it ok to put them around the edge of my globe artichoke bed?

The spread of globe artichokes is massive.
I'd be worried the garlic would be overshadowed by the GA leaves and go rotten.

Do you have any spare tubs you can use Donna, if not, give me a shout as I have a couple of plastic ones spare approx 18" diameter. I can easily drop them down to you.

Thats a thought Nicos. It will be my first proper season of Globes next year, they are just little babies at the moment. I think You are right!

Back to the drawing board. Maybe I could do shallots in the same bed? Any tips on a good variety to try for the first time? I got too fed up with onions for the past two years. Or what esle could I put in the same bed as garlic?

Mine were also on the small side & were planted in a bed, maybe it was the variety I don't know. Anyway let me know.

Hello, could you possibly tell me the (approximate) diameter of your florist buckets, please? Cause I was planning on planting some garlic in them tomorrow, but I'm a bit worried now!!

What's gone wrong with onions?.... if it';s white rot then the garlic and shallots will suffer from it too....

Garlic should be fine in tubs.In fact it might fare better if we have another dry spring/early summer because you would be watering tubs. All of mine was planted in the ground last year and lots of it ended up tiny which was down to lack of water.

Sarzwix, thanks I'll go with the tubs. Just need to figure out the spacing - the pots I have are all 23cm/9in diameter ... I don't suppose anyone could recommend how many I should plant in one of these, please? I just don't want to get it wrong and I've never done this before!

Yep I know that chris, as we had it 2 years in a row, thats why I did some in the florist buckets this year. BUt they were tiny and didnt split, I think my buckets were too small. The free beds are at my friends allotment and so far in previous years 3 beds have had mouldy nose in succession so Ithink its likely the whole plot will have it.(We share our plots)

I have a plot too (not a graet one admittedly, but its mine!) so I am rethinking pots and seeing if I can jiggle things around to do shallots and garlic. Given up on onions as they are so cheap to buy at the market, whereas shallots are always a little luxory for me.

Hi Croila, not sure of size, probably 8-9" though. Bigmal was offering large tubs which would probably be better. Im defo no expert though! Think I am gonna jiggle and put them in my plot then add shallots. NOt sure of mouldy nose there as have never done alliums there, just brassicas and squash this year and a bed of celeriac!

Hello jackyspratty, can I ask please, what size exactly were your pots? I have some shallots as well as garlic I really need to get planted but I'm scared my pots will not be the right size
