Cabbage beasties

I harvested one of my greyhound cabbage today. Took off the outer leaves and a couple of those little slugs at the lottie. However when I was cutting it up at home I was horrified to come across some smallish red worms , very fast moving , right down in the heart. Is this normal, slugs I expect to find or even caterpillars but worms .........?

Cabbage had probably started to deteriate and it was brandling worms that you find in a wormery. Won't hurt you but need to be removed before cooking LOL.

Do they taste better raw then ?

Cabbage looked fine , wasn't splitting or anything and the worms were sent on their merry way.

Well, I hear that for coleslaw you don't want the cabbage wormed up...

Worms naturally congregate where there is the right temperature and humidity. So these will have hatched from eggs at the base of the plant and just found themselves a damp cosy spot where moisture collects at the base of the leaves, in wrinkles etc.
Don't think of it as a problem, think of it as a fishing opportunity !
