To settle the argument once and for all (I wish)...

Calabrese is the type that is planted and harvested in the same year.

Broccoli is the type that is planted one year and harvested in the next.

Supermarkets on the other hand don't hold a distinction between the two and are known to sell both types under both names!

Some people maintain that the single heading types are calabrese and the sprouting types are broccoli.

In my opinion that's false, you can get sprouting calabrese and you can get heading broccoli. The distinction is when it's harvested, not how it it harvested or what it looks like when is harvested.

Calabrese is just the name of a type of Broccoli bred in the Calabria region of Italy, for an Autumn harvest.
Broccoli has bean bred to show many forms, some are large head, some are sprouting heads; they can be green, white or purple

So Calabrese is Broccoli, but not all Broccoli is Calabrese.

Have it with bean bred - it's really tasty.
