Tomatoes - Bursting at the seams?!

My Tommies are all out and slowly starting to turn red. Only problem is, I've noticed a few of them are splitting?? They seem to just be bursting open of their own accord.

Not sure why this is and how to stop it?

Any ideas?

Some of mine are doing this as well. I think its caused by too little followed by too much watering.

Some varieties are more prone to this than others though. In my experience, Sungold and Black Cherry are beggars for it - sad as they are really tasty toms!

Allotment tommies.

I planted some toms on my lottie as its been very dry here in Sussex. They seem healthy and have fruits but they show absolutely noooooooo signs of ripening.I also have some rogue plants from flower basket compost(it suprises me when people say they composted tomato plants)which are 100 & 1000's variety. These are full of fruits but no ripe ones. My greenhouse ones are ripening very slowly.Only after putting ripe bannana in with them to try and speed things on.I never have much success with toms boo hoo.

all my toms are outside. all my plants have large fruit on them, im just waiting for them to ripen. so far its my tumbling toms in my basjet that are skowly turning red. then i think its going to be my 100 and 1000's as ive seen one tiny tom thats red. then im hoping my large plants will ripen sometime this month before blight strikes!

Am having a few problems with tomatoes ripening this year and also trying to combat blight which has got into the greenhouse. I keep cutting the blight back but if the tomatoes don't ripen soon then I'll be cutting back into stems with trusses on.

If you can I find its best to water Tom's a little in the morning and a little at night rather than one big soaking. Works for me anyway's

My pet theory is that the toms will split when the inside of the tomatoes swell up too fast after watering for the skins to expand (or the skin can't expand andy further which is usually the case when they are ripe)

For me, it usually happens with Gardeners' Delight and Sungold and I was think that they were probably at their peak a week before hand.

Best option - if you haven't harvested them before they split throw them into this recipe:

my tomatos in the green house are looking well and healthy just realy slow to rippen,
however i have 2 large red zebra veriety in a large pot on the patio and there coming along much better.infact ive just took a couple of for my ham sandwiches for work tomorrow...lol
