Teeny tiny onions

the onions I grew at the allotment from sets and the ones in my mums garden from sets are about the size of ping pong balls,however the onions from seed at my mums are much larger,some over a pound.
the shallots at the lottie have cropped magnificently and some are bigger than the autumn planted red onion sets in the bed next door ,go figure.
