Comfrey tea is supposedly full of potassium and stinks

Nettle tea is supposedly full of nitrogen and stinks just as much.

Soak a pile of any type of weeds and they stink the same.

*Wonders* whether drowned weeds make a reasonably good liquid manure?

I have long suspected as much! However, I think some plants contain more of certain elements. Maybe people recommend comfrey for that reason.

When you think about it - you put all sorts of plant material on your compost heap and they all break down to make nourishing stuff.

I think when making comfrey or nettle tea. .just drop a bit of other weeds too.. I do this by adding some burdock, thistles and dandelion when making nettle tea..
My rabbit waste is full of seeds, therefore i soak that too to get usefull stuff out.. It is a mix of rabbit litre, grass hay and wooden chips along with seed mix(their food)

I always have weed soup on the boil - I am hoping that if we ever get robbed again they brush up against it and spill some on their jeans - but anyway.

I use the liquid to water stuff in the summer; and dig a trench for the solids and put them in the bottom [with clothes peg on nose] and fill the trench in, and then plant seedlings in direct. It really helps to keep the roots moist.

I know that dandelions are as good as comfrey, if not better, so I always put them in my mix. Using the same thoughts I put in any other deep rooted weeds, then I put in whatever else I dig up as well

I have two buckets on the go......one of comfrey and one of nettles. Just cleared the stringy bits out of each today and poo, it didn't arf pong! Both smell the same so I'll need to remember which is which.

If I could just find a weed that was high in phosphorus I could make a tea from it and add the three together giving a balanced liquid fertiliser with equal proportion of NPK, similar to growmore.

I think brocolli is high in phosphorus but I'm loath to make tea from it as I prefer eating it. Any brocolli plants that have bolted could be worth a trial submersion though!

My weeds usually go through a chook first before getting added to heap!

I saw on Gardeners world last night a good idea of attaching a down pipe to the shed and stuffing it full of comfrey and then adding a weighted plastic bottle to the pipe with a watering can underneath to catch all the liquid.

I just bought some comfry and am going to give it a try.

I plan to make a few of these myself...............I've just never gotten round to doing it!

I'm not making any bucket pong this year-made some last year and it's not nice when you just want to sit in the garden with a cuppa and then this eau du comfrey comes to your nose.
I put some comfrey into empty milk bottles with water-the smell stays inside and I still have some pong for plants without my OH complaining about the smell(don't blame him).
Womble,I heard about dandelion rich in potassium,wonder why comfrey is preferred for making liquid fertilizer than dandelion(much more common)?Because now's the time to feed the toms and peppers and there's not much of dandelions in sight?What about making a dandelion pong earlier in the year or drying them off for later use?

Yea, but you really don't need the bottle. The rain washes it down and I always have plenty in my watering can each visit...if it doesn't rain just pour a cupful in and it will wash the goodies into the watering can for you.

Trying Alpaca tea this year. Brewing in a tub at the moment. Not used it as yet but so far all the veg where I've put the Alpaca manure are doing better than last year.

It smells a bit sweetish but nothing like the pong from the comfrey I tried last year.
