Restocking Blowaways

I use the wire shelfs from an old one to put across my beds to stop the bloomin' cats on my beds.

B&Q sell grafted Aubs btw - I think �3-4.. not sure what they're grafted onto, if it makes them more vigerous or not.. but they're bog standard (black beauty i presume) ones.

Grafted aubergines will be strong disease free and a good cropper, even if they are expensive.

So called " blowaways" give us, the few not trapped in the debt spiral which is/will be mortgage owners, the chance to grow some crops under cover. Mine is weighted down with old railway sleepers and moves and shakes a bit but has not shifted position in months. I have 6 foot tomato plants tied by twine onto cross ropes conected to the frame..............they are fine. Everytime the wind gusts, they get a little shaking, just enough to harden them up and fill the "greenhouse" with pollen. Growing stuff in them is a half way house between outdoors and undercover because the front door flap needs to be left open tied back during the day, so in the end you get, in the case of tomatoes, a mixture of the tastes between outdoor crops and undercover crops. In my experience that means a deeper, richer, fuller flavour to the fruit...............although not to the extent of outdoor grown fruit.

Reading this thread has made me think that we need to point out there are 2 types of 'blowaway' the tall shelving one and the 6x4 ft walk-in one. I can fit one tomato in a shelved one (shelves removed ) and 3 growbags with assorted toms, peppers and aubergines in the walk-in one. My 2nd shelf style has seedlings and salads growing on.

I've got a few aubergine seedlings surplus to requirements. They are a mini variety (without going out to the greenhouse I can't remember the name), which are thorn/spine free.

I should have to say, I was a bit late sowing, but they are coming along nicely.
