  • Help with Mushroom Compost

    Hi everybody,

It's been a while since I posted so I hope everyone is still enjoying the gardening bug

    Anyway my question....

When I was younger I remember a allotment gardener who grew mushrooms under the hedge bottom at his home. He used to get sacks/bags of mushroom compost and spread them out under the hedge and they produced brilliant button mushrooms.

I wondered if anybody could shed some light on this mushroom growing for me. ?

And also does anybody know if I can get hold of mushroom compost near where I live which is Chesterfield. ?

The spent mushroom compost will have the fungal spores/hyphae within it which can produce more mushrooms. I presume that a position under a hedge (low light and damp) were appropriate for the mushrooms to be produced.

There is an a Google ad below this post which links to mushroom compost sale. I live in Derby (not too far from Chesterfield and haven't found a local supply of mushroom compost.

Last year I used mushroom compost in a salad bed next to my fence. It's just on the north side so doesn't get very much sun. About 8 or 9 mushroom (big ones) appeared in a bed of about 1ft x 2ft.

Sadly though I don't like mushrooms!

Last year we managed to get some mushroom compost and spread it on the ground. We had a fantastic crop of mushrooms without doing anything.I don't know if there would be any spores left now though so its back to the Mushroom Farm.
