Growing carrots in a container

I've got a large dustbin - 18" diameter x 18" deep and I'd like to have a go at growing some show carrots.

I've got a Which? Best Buy compost - New Horizon Organic peat free - and intend to mix some soil and sharp sand through it. Can anyone recommend a ratio of these?

I also was going to put a layer of well-rotted manure in the bottom to encourage them to grow down. Is this agood idea and if so what depth of manure?

Would welcome any other advice. Thanks in advance.

Forget the manure as carrots don't like it anywhere near. Not sure what to suggest for your growing medium with you wanting show carrots.

I grow carrots every year in a Dustbin, I read carrot fly don't fly at the height of a Dustbin.
I put an old Christmas tree stump in the bottom so I don't use too much compost.
Then about a third half rotted compost, a third fully rotted compost and top off with a third shop bought compost.
Works a treat.
I empty it in spring and use the compost in my flower tubs.
