Spring planting garlic?

I found the shriveled remains of some garlic bulbs I bought for planting in November. Clearly, I didn't plant them in November

Is it a) too late to pop some garlic in and b) what is spring planting garlic? Can I just buy whatever is cheapest on ebay and stick it in?

I picked some up in Sainsburys when I bought a bag of seed potatoes and it is sprouting nicely in the ground.
NB: it was garlic for growing not for eating

Garlic needs a certain amount of time below 4�c..better still freezing, to stimulate good clove and bulb production. Can be planted now in Sussex but it will most likely tend to be small with a couple of cloves at best, will often run to flower and may not be great for storing ....you may get some results though and it might be nice used fresh..or stored frozen as garlic butter.

If you've got the space it's got two chances eh!

I grew elephant garlic which is much milder- and was Spring planted- it grew into a solid sphere.
We left a few in the soil to overwinter and pulled those in the Spring ( having been in he soil for a year)- and they'd split perfectly

I just used SuperU garlic first time round and its got better every year since.
Garlic is like rhubarb in that it likes to have a certain amount of "cold" hours to make sure it grows properly, and you may have missed the boat for this year.
However I do seem to recall watching Lord Huge of Whittingstallshire and he was using "green" garlic (I think he called it). Fresh garlic, not left to dry, no crispy outer skin, and was using it for several different dishes, so even if it doesnt split its worth a punt.

I too found some garlic that I'd bought in November and forgotten to plant with the others - Elephant variety so I stuck it in in mid-February and hoped for the best. Nothing's surfaced yet though!

Thanks all, do you think if I got some garlic and stuck it in a freezer for a day or so it will think it's had a frost?

Otherwise I might just stick some cloves in for green garlic. Most places are sold out of it anyways

I planted my garlic in my little wicker raised bed yesterday, i'm in edinburgh ... i just followed the little information on the packet - 3cm down, 10cm apart. i seperated the bulbs into cloves. NB I bought these from a garden center!!
