help are my toms going to be ok

hello grapes

my toms have been in the coldframe for the last week trying to harden them of. they have been affected with the cold and the plants are looking very sorry and not to happy.they are well established with lots of leaves.
will they recover or will i start again?
they are romas and harbinger. any help most apprieciated

Try bringing them back indoors Colin. I would have thought even down in Sunny Devon it would be too early to start hardening them off.

I would say its too cold too. Wait a couple more weeks and try again

You could do what we do if you're able - put them out to get the light & hopefully heat during the day but definately bring them in at night. The toms will stand lower temps than the chillies but its still way too cold at night for both.

I moved 18 toms out into our new polythene greenhouse yesterday. Doing well so far. Its sooooo hot in there. Unheated on the allotment.

Checked the Max/Min thermometer and realised it had been down to minus 5 overnight. Surprised to se the toms and pepppers still standing!

It's far too early to be trying to harden off tomatoes and chillies, even in Devon.

I found a tender pelargonium in the hanging basket next to my front door - it's withstood months of very cold temps. It's got its own little micro-climate up there on the wall, very sheltered. All the others died back in Nov.


You can't suddenly stick indoor tomatoes & other tender veg into the cold outdoors though. They feel like you'd feel if you were indoors, all toasty like in your jimmies at 20C, and someone decided to plonk you in the garden

I've sown mine outside in the unheated greenhouse, they're alive...so far...
Did the same last year, no hardening off since they were out there anyway, but it was a bit warmer last year...
