I've just been and had a poke round in mine and they have small roots, but it's taken them quite a while to get going...6 weeks, but I'd go with what has already been said they could be far too warm.

I would think the compost is over-wet

Planted mine on the 25th January & dug one up 2 weeks ago as I was convinced they were not going to grow.
They had a root system but no sign of growth & the shallots were firm.
4 of them poked through the ground yesterday.
I`ve never had to wait that long before.

Just been and spotted another one shooting. That's one white and one red so far, the onion sets put in a couple of weeks ago are putting the shallots to shame.

Mine have been sat in the raised bed for over a month doing nothing, then today I spotted a few green shoots. I think mine have been waterlogged with all this wet weather.

Update on the shallots, been planted in plot for best part of a week and still only one green shoot. I think shallots are going to be a washout this year, which is a shame as I love them, like little onion underdogs. Still no idea what could have killed them off. I will give them a few more days to show signs of life and then I will replace them with something else. The space could be used for some Welsh bunching onions "Freddie" instead, I have a tray planted up ready looking for a home.

How is everyone's shallots doing now?
I had some in modules in the GH and planted them out a few weeks ago.
Despite having roots only 2 have poked through so far.
Is it still too early to worry?

I always plant my shallots in the ground at the same time as my garlic in late November. They've been a little bit late this year, but are all doing fine.

yes. They make roots first then come up. Again,it's been cold, mine have only just started making roots now, but then they have been left to their own devices in the garden and at the mercy of birds.

Mine are finally showing a bit of life, some green shoots, way behind the onions.
