Currant tomatoes

I posted this on the 'Tomato Fiends' group, but that seems to be somewhat inactive at the moment, so I thought I'd post it here too:

Has anyone ever grown currant tomatoes? From what I gather from various books, they belong to a different species from most tomatoes - Lycopersicon pimpinellifolium (try saying that after a couple of pints!) as opposed to L. esculentum. The individual fruit are tiny, about the size of a pea, but you get a huge number on each plant - hundreds. I'd like to try them next year, so does anyone know a supplier of seed, and can they recommend a variety?

I can't say I've heard of currant tomatoes, but a teeny tiny tomato I grow is 100s and 1000s (Suttons)- says Micro on the packet. The tomatoes are really small - maybe 1cm in size but really really tasty.

I grew sweet pea currant tomatoes last year in a hanging basket and they fruited for ages.

You do get masses of toms and yes, they are the size of peas.

I saved some seeds, you can have some if you like, send me a pm with your address and I'll get some in the post to you.

Hiya, yup we tried currant toms last year, yes very small and loads of ! I planted some from seeds direct on ebay, cant remeber name sorry something beginning with "R", sure i still have some if you would like some !

I just had to hunt down the thread as I had deleted your pm messages and was mortified to see I may have not told you that they had arrived safely.

That will teach me to be to eager in deleting my pm's.

When I tried to germinate the original bought seeds only one of the four germinated, when I had a go with my own seeds taken from the original toms that I grew last year (the same seeds that I sent you), I found that all 3 that I tried germinated. I only wanted to grow one but looks like I will have three in hanging baskets.
