  • The idea with SFG is that overall crop is increased, even if it's reduced per plant.

    • I can't remember if I asked this before, but lets say you get a disease, surely roating the individual squares won't help prevent it in similar-family groups? Or do you rotate pushing say brassicas over the other side of the bed, etc?

I don't know the answer to your Q chris & I know you use brassicas only as an example but I am keeping my brassicas away from my SFG. They are in 2 beds of their own covered with a debris netting cage.

        • You would not plant brassicas in a square used previously for brassicas - you'd plant , say, lettuce.

          • The soil is the same patch though, which is why I was asking It's not like a completely seperate bed (as in what I have - which is seperated completely, i..e no soild inbetween in beds).

In theory disease could spread from one bit to the other, but more important that you don't grow the same group in same area year after year

There are a few courses out there. Not seen any for the UK yet...most seem to be in the USA.

Many peeps on the Vine grow their veg in their gardens rather than on allotments- and space is very limited.
Rotation and 'good hygeine' are very important when intentionally ovecrowding crops.
Any advice you share with us is very welcome.

Peeps have only asked about your location because we have peeps on the Vine from far afield( eg Faulklands, NZ, Australia, USA- and other European countries) and it does make a difference when offering advice if a person asks a question. It really doesn't matter if you choose not to reveal your location, but please bear that in mind if in 6 months you fancy asking a question about something else

                • Just Googled 'certified square foot teacher' and the first entry is
'Bartholomew and his staff .................................... Participants will become certified to teach the Square Foot Gardening technique in their own communities. Once someone becomes a Certified Square Foot Gardening instructor, then they are authorized to set up their own teaching workshops and earn extra income.
Registration for the three-day course is $165 and includes all materials. For additional information and to register, gardeners may visit the official site of the Square Foot Gardening Foundation: Square Foot Gardening Foundation. Click on Square Foot University. • I love the 'authorized to set up their own teaching workshops' that Suky found. Authorised by whom? I'd love to be authorised (note my British spelling) to set up my own teaching workshop. I could make a fortune if I could just find somebody daft enough to pay.

He reminded me of a guy from the western States that joined another forum that I dabble on, mainly devoted to exotic ornamentals. He started by declaring that he was one of the best and most qualified nurserymen in America then promptly advised us all not to fleece our half hardies in winter because the fleece got wet and the wool got soggy and wet sheep fleece is too heavy for most plants. I'm serious and so was he. He didn't last long either. Disappeared from that forum soon after he started the topic on growing your own marijuana.
Why didn't Noah just swat those 2 greenflies?

Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?

                    • This topic is interesting and I think discussion on the subject is fine. Even in the UK, it helps to know where the person is gardening as the soil and climate is very different in each area.

                              • Now I think we need some clever modding- our new friend Dallaran is from the south east and on his introduce yourself thread there is a nice, polite and informative discussion on square foot gardening!!
