    UUrmm..just had a thought- you do know you can't remove a tree/bush/hedge containing an active nest??
    You've getting very close to the time limit ( March)
    Have you checked??

    You can always cover it in fine netting, but that's a bit hedge!

      Again, thanks one and all. As I said, I'm going to put off doing anything with it until after summer, so it will certainly be free of nesting birds. (I'm pretty sure there are none now as it's too dense and I've never seen anything going in there, but best to be on the safe side). Of course, if I met a nest while cutting I'd stop cutting until I was very sure that it wasn't active!

      Also, waiting until after summer gives me time to decide which of the many good suggestions here to replace it with
