I'm still trying to find the bestest varieties for some veg-I'm going to grow no more than 2 varieties from each veg(except chillies and toms)-if one of them fails maybe the other one will perform better.
The ones I'll stick to are:maincrop potato Desiree and dwarf french bean Purple Teepee.
Desiree:I had a good crop last year, they have lovely texture and flavour. On the other side I had Pink Fir Apples-won't grow them again.PFA is a LATE maincrop-tubers were smallish(they weren't in the ground long enough) and affected by scab.I'm not going to grow any LATE maincrop potatoes as the growing season here is obviously not enough for them.
    Purple Teepee-brilliant bean,easy to grow,spot and pick,stringless (even older pods)and good yield.

I have to admit I like to sample new varieties each year for the most of my homegrown vegetables. I find choosing the seeds are part of the fun, whilst also taking your mind off the freezing cold winter months. I do however have a favorite and will always use the same pumpkin seed variety for growing my giant Halloween pumpkins. It is well known in giant pumpkin growing that the 'Atlantic Giant' is king when it comes to size and weight.

I use the pumpkins for Halloween carving, competing in a giant pumpkin competition and not forgetting the 100's of pounds of pumpkin flesh for soups.

Here’s a link and picture of my winning Halloween carving competition entry from last year.

I've only had a proper tiny veggie patch since last year, but for the past 5 or 6 years have been growing french climbing bean Blauhilde. Because of space, veggies that I choose also have to look pretty and be relatively prolific, and these plants have beautiful deep purple stems that wind up the bamboo canes, with mauve flowers. The purple pods themselves also give colour to the plot when they're hanging. I'm never without this.
