Don't forget with onion sets, birds have a habit of pulling them out. I'm not sure if autumn sets push themselves out the same as spring planted ones though.

As Mally says, do check them for a week or so afterwards, so you can replace any that have been pulled out or popped out..
I usually do mine in October and as usual, will do some winter onions from seed also. The seed ones are showing at the mo.....
When planting sets and garlic, I pop a pinch of BFB in the holes too...I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives....
