Onion set recommendations?

hi, I 'accidently' managed to pick up some autumn planting onion sets and a few Solient Wight garlic bulbs

Oh dear, I am sooooo familiar with that "accidental" thing!

I've just ordered onion sets and am about to get some garlic too, and being a complete beginner myself with these things I'll read any further advice here with great interest

If I plant onions and garlic next month, when could I expect the bed to be free? I'd like to try overwintering as I've not done it before, but I need to figure out how it will fit into my allotment plan for next year.

I find things have fosbury- flopped into my basket by the time I get to the checkout.

Onions and garlic planted around now should be ready for harvesting end of May / June next year.

finally manged to get a pack of jap onion sets from wilkos ( they've been sold out the last few times i went). i will be growing them in containers. they are going to go in once my toms are done.
i've also ordered some garlic - early purple wight. it says its ready from May, has anyone tried this variety before? is it really ready this early?

hi, Ok I'm a complete novice and I have never overwintered anything before but yesterday I was in Wilko's and I 'accidently' managed to pick up some autumn planting onion sets and a few Solient Wight garlic bulbs but I have no idea what to do with them Do I start the sets in large modules like I did with my spring planted ones or do you just sow direct, or a bit of both and what about the garlic ??? If some one could explain it in a kind if idiots guide type way I'd be ever so grateful I do have a greenhouse if that makes any difference. thanks

Onion sets just put one in a hole with the tip just showing above ground and space them out, the birds do like to pull them up so just keep an eye and pop them back.
Garlic, split as if you are using them for cooking but dont peel them, pop them in the ground, one bulb usually gives you quite a few maybe 8 or 9 plants.
