How many onion sets is to many

Beginning of week I had an order of 300 onion sets from Marshalls which is more than I usually plant. Today I received another 200 from Mr Fothergills which I had forgotten I had ordered (can't understand how I ordered them as they were expensive). So I have now got twice as many onion sets as I really wanted. Only consolation is I have the space for them and we can always use more onions. Just felt a bit stupid when the second lot arrived.

Have you got lots of spare soil that you can pop them in over the winter? Or any lottie neighbours that you can donate them to?

There are four of in the household and I am now planting 150 overwintering sets and will also do another 150 in the spring. That seems to be the right amount for us along with the 50 garlic cloves going in later.

500 seems a lot but its only 1 and third a day over a year and its probably one of the things we use nearly every day for something or other....as youve got the room and youve paid (a lot) for them get em in

I'm doing 150 red and 150 white and in the spring 200 of each.

I never seem to do that well with onions so I normally need two onions when only one is listed in a recipe.

Jeepers, 500, and I thought I was overdoing it with 400 last Autumn pluss some from seed I haven't order mine yet, I've got to wait for my red cabbages to be harvested and my runners/borlottis to finish before I can think of planting any.

I did 200 last autumn and they didn't last us very long so I think you're (subconsciously!) on the right track!

For the last three seasons, I have planted out 25kg of onion sets (approx 6500 sets) You cannot begin to believe how happy I am only to be planting 1000 sets next spring

I only planted 50 sets last year and regretted it as I had a really good crop from them (just about finished now). I planned to grow more this year maybe 200 Senshyu when they become available in the local GC!

PS I also have about 40 that I've grown from seed.

Hahahaha You're not alone goji, that's exactly what I did with seed potatoes early this year - ended up with 3 bags of Sarpo Mira and 2 bags of Sarpo Axona And none at all of Harlequin which is what I thought I'd ordered the first time round D'oh!

I've just ordered 100 Red Cross sets, and 50 of Troy to put in where my maincrops are at the moment. Red Cross were brilliant for me last time, and are keeping well up to press. I've gone off Shakespeare though, after 2 years of them not keeping, so Troy are a trial this time.

How many of there are you at home Gojiberry?
I would have thought 500 onions (less a few that possibly dont grow) would be about right for a family of 4 perhaps? As has been said, its only just over 1 a day, and onions are used in pretty much everything.
If you have the space to grow them, then no probs, but storage may be a problem.
I dont mean space but literally keeping them useable for a year.

If I had the space I would grow at least that many. You can never really have too many onions especially as OH loves to cook curries

Sarz - my Troys did very nicely this year. Will be doing the Marshalls offer again of the Red Cross, Troy and Radar mind you I have discovered that Red Cross are not for keeps, had a few go rotten that I'd strung so using up the reds instead of whites for now. I've sown F1 High Keepers this year instead of Senshyus to see how they go from seed...

My Red Cross are keeping really well?! I've just used 3 this morning and not a blemish on/in them, but 2 Shakespeare that I cut open were going soft & mouldy on the inside

Had a shock when I checked my Marshall's order confirmation this morning - there's 100 sets in their packs not 50 like T&M So I'm expecting 300 sets, not 150
Think I'll be giving some away, I don't want soo many overwintered onions - got to leave room for the Spring planted ones!
