black eggs thingies

i've got some sort of brassica growing in a crate... think it might be cabbages but i'm not quite sure, do cabbages grow on the top of a 1ft stem?

anyway, i've just had a look and there's an oil slick of horrible biggish black eggs growing in the middle... what are they? i squashed a couple and got green goop on my fingers
