Warty Spuds

I lifted some Harmony poatoes for tea tonight (they were absolutely wonderful) but a couple were covered in what looked like dark, lumpy warts.

I cut them open to investigate and they were clean, just these strange growths on the outside. What is this and what causes it?

It is scab, from limey soil. Harmless though not attractive.

My book says this could be "Wart Disease" Once very serious, now uncommon as nearly all modern varieties are immune. No treatment, destroy affected tubers.
It also says DEFRA must be informed of the outbreak, but I'd post pictures and await a more knowledgeable Grape before declaring your plot a biohazard zone!

All my firdt earlies had these this year although strangely none of the seonds so far. And none last year. I just peeled them instead of using them like new potatoes.

It's gross isn't it?! Fairly easy to tell the difference between the 2 things! And the scab picture was the worst one I could find, they don't usually look that bad...

some of the ones i had for my tea last night had scabs but i cooked them anyway and covered the scabby bits with gravy so OH didn't notice

I'm getting spud envy! I planted my free Vivaldi spuds really late and they have been flowering for a couple of weeks but still looking healthy.

I'm just hoping I get to harvest some spuds before they succumb to the dreaded blight.

i ordered the free vivaldi ones too but they sent me some different ones.. mine have been flowering for a couple of weeks too.. how long you gonna leave it till you have a furtle?

I had some of mine with warty bits on them for the first time this year. Only a couple and tended to be on small potatoes. It wasn't scab as I have had that on potatoes before and it wasn't wart disease.There was no discolouration on the warty bit. I put it down to the possibility of one of these herbicides in the manure.

I'm amazed I've held out this long!

I'm seriously considering a tentative furtle this evening!
