Raised beds - bricks or link-a-bord

Hi All

Am looking at making my first ever proper raised beds so I can do away with pots. Can I use bricks or has anyone used the link-a-bords?

I bought 2 link a bord beds last year and they were so good I bought 2 more and supports for nets over them this year. They take no time to put together.

They vary in price depending on where you buy them. i found it was cheeapest to order straight from the manufacturer.

Hi Donna,

Can't remember if you garden at home or at an allotment. If you're building these for the allotment, I'd do them with gravel boards and 2"x2" posts in the corners and in the middle of the long sides, its far cheaper.

But if its for the garden, I'd opt for either brick (see mine in my album - 'self build May/June') or new sleepers which look really smart. My brother has a Linkaboard raised bed, and I think its quite useful should you want to move it at any stage, but I prefer something a bit more permanent.

Ok with brick if you can lay e'm straite, not had anything to do with link boards so can't say ow't. Pay yer money and take yer choice which you think which will be easyer & cheaper (don't forget the cost).

Cost it is for me. Someone donated some scaffolding planks - supported by bricks - or just bricks. I'm growing veg to save money so seems silly to pay out for support.

I bought link-a-board beds for convenience and they're great. However, if you're being thrifty and you're able, you could save a packet making your own. I still have loads of tubs even though I have some ground space and the raised beds!

Did ours (3 years ago) with gravel boards with posts in the corner for support. The wood must be 'seasoned' in order that it can stand the weather. My partner must have put them up properly as in the 3 years they've been at the allotment, they haven't needed any further work.

I got 700 ish bricks off Freecycle...didnt cost me a penny, just time moving them...see my thread...hope this helps.

We made ours with decking when it was on special offer at B&Q.

I made my 6'x3' beds from gravel booards.
My local timber yard does 12' boards and charge about 50p per cut.
I got my wood about 3 years ago, and it cost me about �40.00 including the corner posts for 4 boards cut in half and 2 boards cut into 4 pieces for enough to make 4 beds.
I don't use posts at halfway point as 6' boards don't really need them.

Just working out the price and if I worked out that it would be 5 bricks wide by 10 long (roughly 3ft by 6ft that is I think) and two bricks high it would be cheaper than the link-a-bord... How do you secure the bricks or can they just be dry stacked at two high?

I have just purchased 15 x 8' decking board from b and q, they are selling them at �2.49 for 8' length bargain I wanted scaffold boards but they are hard to come by and quite pricey, did find a wood recycling place in Bristol they sale 13' lengths for �9 but none in stock
