Sweetcorn trouble!

Stupidly I planted my sweetcorn in amongst the broad beans, which totally overshadowed them. The broad beans were pulled up about 3 or 4 weeks ago. Since then the sweetcorn has grown a bit and the stems have thickened but they are still only about 2 foot tall. Today I noticed that they are starting to produce a flower stem already! Will I get any cobs or should I give up and pull them up?

I have done exactly the same thing (and now figured out we don't like broad beans and LOVE sweetcorn, d'oh)

Hoping for the best and to get one good cob, the last few years one decent cob is about all I've had anyway

In the (slightly altered) words of the Beatles song, SR, I'd say (sing) "Let 'em be!" - they'll do something... They might end up a bit smaller or a bit later than you'd like but plants seem generally programmed to do the best they can in the circumstances so if you're now encouraging them I think they've time to produce something tasty before the first frosts... Supermarkets sell mini-cobs at inflated prices so you can always tell neighbours that's wholly intentional and put in a casserole (with borlotto beans!) bb.

u should be o.k, my sweetcorn has only just started to put some growth on in the last couple of weeks. most of mine are 2foot or under as well.i only seem to get 2 or 3 cobs per plant

Glad I'm not the only one with stumpy sweetcorn at the moment!! Will keep them in and see what happens. Thanks for the replies.

Ours is about 2ft tall, it was the same last year and caught up just fine. We ate some ace corn last September. We are growing Ashworth from real seeds this year. Last year we tried bi-coloured corn.

They still have a couple of months at least and I'd expect you to get a crop. Having said that, I've grown Swift in the past and not been too impressed, I keep trying different types and going back to 'Sundance' which have never let me down no matter how the summer turned out, even the year I set them out less than 12 hours before the worst floods we've ever known.

Mine are about 2' tall too, and beginning to flower. They were leftovers from an old pack my Mum had, so no idea what they are, I didn't expect them to germinate to be honest, so anything is a bonus. I've never grown Sweetcorn before.
