Had a rummage around in the garden!!

And decided to pick a few things for dinner. Quite chuffed as this is the first year we've had a raised bed and things are growing superbly in it.



Got just over 7lb of Arran Pilot's off 3 plants. Is that good?? Though they were in planters not in the raised bed.

The OH's gonna roast us a lovely free range chicken to accompany our first harvest!

It's kohl rabi isn't it? Don't know if that's the correct spelling but they are quite delicious, I've only just put some in this month and you're harvesting already, well done!

Indeed it is Florence! Kolibri F1 Kohl Rabi to be precise. Thought I'd give it a go, but by god I was surprised at how big the leaves got. Started crowding everything else out around it in the raised bed.......a lesson learnt me thinks. Looking forward to having some in a little while, I'll tell you what I make of it. Those little Arcoat Turnips are delicious though....already had two lots of those out of the garden!

I didn't find much to the taste Rodo, but I grew green and white ones (sorry can't remember the variety), but I did find they are excellent "carriers" taking on other flavours in stews, casseroles and soups and adding variety to the consistency. I hear they're very popular in Germany, very often eaten raw before beer!

No German ancestry there then. I didn't like it raw (I grated some into a salad) but it was lovely in a casserole.

That's fantastic looking kohl rabi! I've just grown green ones this year and thought that they looked fab... wow...going to definitely get purple ones next year.

I didn't realise purple kohl rabi was so vibrant! Amazing! I have some purple star (?) ones to try and am quite excited now!

Kohl Rabi takes me back to my childhood, when mum was preparing the cabbage us kids used to wait for the cabbage stalk to eat raw and kohl rabi tastes and reminds me of that. I have never had them cooked but would think the flavour and texture would be ruined by cooking. I will often eat one while out on the lottie.
