something eating the turnips?

I've two short rows of small turnips (Tokyo Cross) - pulled last weekend for dinner, and all had brown lines running through them - a couple had small maggots in them!
What is attacking, and any suggestions on what I should do? I was going to start off another couple of rows as they look good (and leaves are nice) - but I don't want to do that and have the next lot ruined as well!

It sounds like it might be cabbage root fly I wouldn't plant any more brassicas in that area until it comes round in the crop rotation. Do you have any cabbages/broccoli/kale/cauliflowers in the same bed? Because they'll all be at risk too.

It's a new raised bed - the only other things in the bed are mixed salad, a few bushy tomatoes and a load of Skerry Blue potatoes (which are currently in flower!)

I've brussel sprouts in the next bed but probably 8 ft away or so - they are looking very healthy right now - should I do the circle of carpet underlay just in case?

Such a shame - they do look so cute - oh well, if I do again, I'll try keeping fleece over them...

It's not something I've come across in my brassicas, i think because I grow them all under enviromesh to keep the cabbage white butterflies off. So I'm not totally sure what the best thing to do is...
I think I'd do what I could to protect the brussels, but, if they're already in there...
