Sweetcorn....maybe sickly

Hello

Have sweetcorn growing and was looking pretty well until last week when the leaves started turning yellow...as this is my first time I am not sure this is normal...yesterday I passed a garden with sweetcorn growing and theirs is very green...
so not sure, any suggestions?

I checked mine out earlier today and they've turned a limey green/yellow colour.

I have two lots in my garden and one in my neighbours so all in different areas/beds so I'm guessing it may be something to do with the cold weather and torrential rain we've had over the last few days rather than some sort of nurtient deficiency. Has it been cold and wet with you too?

This is my first time with sweetcorn and I so want it to survive, hopefully someone more knowledgable will come along soon and help.

My sweetcorn has gone yellowish a couple of times. Each time I have given it a big liquid feed and it has greened up so maybe that is the problem - it's starving.

The problem I have now is that the male shoots are coming out the top - no pollen yet - but there are no cobs appearing out the sides to get fertilized. I hope I'm not going to end up with a nil crop.

I'm surprised there are any nutrients left in the soil after the rain we've had! Alice, is it a seaweed based liquid feed you are using?

Sweetcorn likes it warm! Its been colder and wetter....simply that. They go a bit yellow (like beans really) A spray of maxicrop might help. They will perk up if and when the ol' current bun returns. Too much nitrogen will not help and just give you a blousey great green plant with less maize.

Don't panic... They will tend to get over it all (unless they were very small)

When setting out pot raised plants I find that old litre water bottles with bottoms removed can be used as cloches can help.

That's a good idea Paul. My daughter's Mini-pop plants haven't gone yellow so much as a bit purple-tinged... I know that's down to cold Bally weather! I'll suggest the bottle cloches, and see how many we can find after school.

thanks everyone, yes its been pretty cool the last week or so....
my mini pop have refused to get any bigger so i think they will not come to anything, I willl give the sweet corn another week or so then try feeding
weather wise it is pouring out so looks like the sweetcorn will be sulking all weekend
