If you go to this website The British Potato Variety Database you should be able to select the varieties from there and it tells you if they flower or not.

hey Tattieman, hope you had a good birthday.

I never knew that about the flowers - in fact I thought you had to wait until the flowers died off!!! It's some years since I grew potatoes but I think that's what I did (like, I waited till the flowers died). I've got some in a couple of bins this year so I'll follow your advice about the flowers.

( Got myself some Red Duke of York and Charlotte to plant next month in containers for Xmas spuds thanks to your advice..thank you Tattieman)

Just got back from a 5 day break to find all my spuds in containers wilting, so have spent lots of time watering today. I feel very guilty that I've abused them!
Is there a RSPAP??

Cupcake it depends how big you want your spuds. You can wait until the haulms die back or you can have a quick furtle at one plant. Maddie106 glad you are enjoying growing your spuds and Don't worry i won't report you for potato abuse. My videos have been updated for you all to enjoy.

Potatoes flowering

I remember reading about removing flowers from potatoes somewhere on the forum a week or so ago, but can't remember whether it was earlies, second earlies or maincrop. I've got second earlies and maincrop both showing buds now and don't want to get it wrong. Please would someone refresh my memory? Thanks.

OK, been up the plot today and noticed that all my main crop are trying to flower. Have nipped the buds off and the rain is doing all the watering which I need so no problems there. However, no sign of any flowers on either my first earlies (Ulster Classic) or second earlies (Charlotte). Don't usually grow much in the way of potatoes as have never had room at home and this is my first year on the plot but am finding this unexpected. Is something funny happening or am I just being impatient?

if you take off the flowers how do you know when the spuds are ready? what i mean is you won't be able to see them dying off which i thought was an indication of them being ready?

Alison the ulster classic don't flower much. ckfe the flowers don't really mean that your potatoes are ready when they die but they are more of an indication that you could have tubers forming.

Thanks Tattieman, was guessing that might be the case. They've been in now since March so am thinking of having a furtle next week to see what's going on down there! Am quite excited, the plants have done really well so am hoping for a decent crop.
