Slugs Have Eaten Carrot Leaves

Spot the newbie.....

As above I now have 2 bare lines in my raised bed where I used to have carrots. Will the carrots still grow underground or should I pull up whats left and start again. I have since taken offensive steps against the slimey little varmints (slug pellets and fleece)!!! I have also put plastic circles topped with salt dipped in vaseline around my baby bush beans. Any other suggestions gratefully accepted.

Re the slugs, I find a pair of scissors, a torch and a late night hunt very very satisying.

they don't like comfrey leaves. If you have some comfry just take the leaves off and scatter them on the ground around the plants you want to protect.

Thanks for those. Went out first thing this morning and the slug pellets seemed to work after a fashion. Is it a sin to go round with a lucozade bottle half full of a salt solution dropping the little beggars in. I think I may look into comfrey. The other thing is the carrots. Will they still be growing underground or should I just turn them over and start again.

I don't know that they will grow without leaves. I'd start again -sorry!

depends how big they are, they may grow new leaves if theres some carrot there ... if theres just a tiny thin root ... probably not

Went to Wyevale yesterday as I have been sooooo busy haven't had time to grow all the veg as I usually do. Put some peas in 3 weeks ago and they still haven't come up(the packet was 3 years old!) so I thought I'd get some from there.

All veg 1/2 price yipee - but bought far too much.

Finished planting last night around 9, then went and checked on them all this morning only to find all the cabbage leaves had been munched in the night!!!

My plot had been invaded not only by slugs but next doors cat as well. Only discovered next doors cat had visited after I saw a dahlia tuber laying on the soil, picked it up - thought how did that get there - oh that's a bit squishy - what's that smell - cat turd!

Haha! What a cat encounter you had! Cats love my newly dug soil so much, and I used to get "gifts" from cats almost every morning in my raised bed, until I put netting all around it! Cats seem to hate netting although they shouldn't have any problem climbing up it.

No, you've lost them. I've never known them to keep growing...when you sow the next lot make sure you pop some slug defences down, whichever you decide on.

ChrisG, If I went round my garden at night with a garden with a torch and scissors I would have a lot of explaining to do as I am overlooked in a built up area. Thinking about applying for an allotment though as I'm really enjoying my foray into grow your own. I could stalk slugs then to my hearts content. To finish I shall be digging up my "carrots" tomorrow and replanting.

Sorry about the carrots, you do raise an interesting point about being seen wandering around at night... that might explain the funny looks the neighbours have been giving me!!

Just a note of warning, be very careful when using salt, even with vaseline. Salt can kill your plants if not used VERY carefully.

That'll explain the black edges on my bush beans. I love this site. Going to dig up old carrot rows and replant, and knowing my luck I'll get carrot fly.
