Brussel Sprouts - The Future of ?

Good morning all,

Could anyone please tell me how growing the Sprouts in the picture should go? I grew them from seed in my raised bed rather like the radishes on the otherside. They've grown fast and strong but........are they too close, will they need cane support, do you think they'd be happy being singly transfered to pots and grown on from there?

They are a bit close. They really need around 2 feet between plants. You could dig up the thinnings and transplant them. Can support would only be needed later in the year when they are taller (>2-3 foot tall).

Sprouts like a lot of space up to 2' between plants and if you site is windy then staking is recommended, they also hate root disturbance, I have never grown sprouts in pots so cannot help you there.

I thought sprouts were one of those plants that positively benefit from being transplanted from seedbed to final growing position? Or is root disturbance something else?

Yeah they do, they just don't like being full grown and then the roots moved around. Like wind rock or anything like that.

The plants look ok so I can only assume you are a fellow sprout hater?

What's the difference between Brussels Sprouts and bogies?
You can't get schoolboys to eat sprouts.

No that would be unthinkable just think of all those bubble and Squeaks you could make with them


I've sowed way to many and finding space for them is gonna be tricky, think some of them will end up amongst the flower beds

Brassicas are supposed to benefit from transplanting as it makes them produce new lateral roots which anchor them better and stop wind rock! Brassicas can be transplanted at nigh on any stage of there growth (my allotment neighbours transplanted spring cabbage which were nearly ready for eating when they changed there plot and they seem to have romped away and heartd up fine)
I grow mine at about 18 inch spacing which is a bit too close........but I still get a reasonable crop!

No problem with moving them and planting at correct distance. Your soil looks a bit on the light side which is never good for sprouts as they like to be cemented into the ground. When you transplant really firm the soil down with your heel and plant them well down in the soil. They are looking good at the moment.

Oh I do love home grown sprouts. If you buy them from the shop I find them to be the same as bought PSB, very disappointing.
But grown yourself, beautiful little buttons of deliciousness Mmmmm
