How many courgettes?

Hi everyone, newbie here.

Hoping to grow some courgettes this year - I buy quite a lot of them, but there's only me, so wondering how many plants I shoul be thinking of? Complete newbie at this game so haven't a clue about cropping yeilds, or storing if I (amazingly) end up with too many

Any advice would be great, ta

You can't store courgettes (unless you pickle them or something, or make them into a sauce and freeze).

I should think 2 plants will give you sufficient ... better make it 3 in case one dies.

I am the same, being only 1 to eat the courgettes. I sow 3 seeds hoping to get 2 good plants and grow them on in case of some disaster happening to one of them. I grow in pots which may give a smaller yield than those planted in soil but still end up with masses. My neighbours are always happy to take my excess veg, especially considering the price of courgette in the supermarket.

Or pick them a lot smaller so you need more to make a meal. Too many is better than not enough!

To store, I always cut them into chunks about half an inch thick, blanch them for 2 mins and then freeze them and they've always been great thrown into a stir fry months after picking!

Hi Rose, welcome to the vine, the 3-2-1 approach as advocated above is a very sound strategy. The first time I sowed Courgettes I sowed 6, three came up but then one withered and two survived.

What a great lot you are - thanks so much for all the advice. Looks like 2/3 plants then - not sure about making rum but seem to remember I used to like marrow, in the days before we'd heard of courgettes

I sow two seeds once a month for three months. By the time the first lot get mildew (they tend to) the next batch is cropping well.

Now that's what I call a really neat idea. My courgettes always get mildew; never thought to successionally grow them! I see I'm not the only one who can't sleep!!!

Never thought of successional sowing of courgettes and there are always so many seeds in the packets - good tip!

Does anyone do the same with cucumbers ?

OOOHHH! I'll sow the Gemma seeds I found this morning. My plants never seem to have a glut

I like a bit of variety so I like to sow a green one a yellow one and a round one. I know they all tend to taste the same but it looks different on the plate. And as everyone says you need to sow at least two to get one. So I usually end up with far to many plants. I do let some go to marrows and if they ripen properly they will store till after Xmas.
