What can I use this for? Do I just mix it with the earth before planting?

Sprinkle it on the surface around plants to be washed in by the rains. It can be mixed into compost but is better applied as a top dressing!

I use BF&B as a quick fix fertiliser as it is immediately available to plants. You can put a sprinkle around plants when you plant them or sprinkle around established plants in the spring to give them a boost. If you are looking for a longer term effect then use growmore, chicken pellets of well rotted manure. You may well find someone has a different opinion but on my fairly light soil BF&B soon washes out.

BFB has a all the major elements (NPK) but does have a certain proportion of quick acting Nitrogen which will scorch plants if it comes into direct contact.
When sprinkling around plants make sure you stay clear of the growing stem and don't get any on the leaves.
I usually use a good handful to the square yard when applying and water in soon after.

Some of the nutrients in BFB are leached very slowly. If applied to the surface they should percolate through the surface quite slowly.............but I would deffo agree with using what you feel comfortable with!

I've been using BFB on my onion and garlic and I must say it's fantastic stuff! A light sprinkling along the row each month and they are looking fab.

I've created a great BF&B "shaker" using a four pint milk canister. Used a hot metal skewer to pierce several holes in the lid - pepper pot style -. BF&B stays dry, convenient size container, even distribution and I don't have to stick my hand in it.

I read somewhere (one of my many books ) not to use BF&B on plants in containers, as it will burn the roots. Anyone else come across this advice? I've been using Miracle Gro 'Organic Choice' stuff for containers instead - it smells just the same (brings the cats sniffing round ) but is sort of granules rather than powder.
