since finding this forum ive got way too excited about growing my own veg ive been digging and planting away like a little a busy little bee, the only problem is

i cant remember which plant is in which pot, now this probably wouldnt be a problem for someone with a little more experience but seems as ive only ever managed to grow cress in infants then im a bit unsure about what to do

ive planted my ruhbarb crown in that eracious soil (that acid one i think it is), will it be ok?

and also ive planted my strawberry plants outside, are they ok out there or will they just die

please help lol

well the think is i bought quite a few plugs off ebay and a few have arrived today but it didnt say what they were!!!
ive definatly planted my blackcurrent, red current and tayberry, i know which these are but cant distinguish between each one
my rhubarb, in the wrong soil though i think?

and i dont have a clue what the last lot were, either cucumber or carrots, or onions or brocolli , i just dont really know ive put 5 plugs in one bucket do you thinak thats too many?? xx

I think you need to pop some photos on here - and get some labels made up!

You can do this quick cheaply by using milk cartons cut up.

Then we can id them for you from the leaves and you can label them up.

Welcome to the madness of growing your own veg though!

If there's no leaves yet, post the photos when they have germinated.

ahh will take some pictures tomorrow and let you have a gander at them, ive planted what just look like some roots today, do you think this will be my carrotts?? it is a bit mad isnt it, im going to bed dreaming about my veg !! im off to get some wood tomorrow for my raised frame/ bed thingy to plant them all in as ive bought about 50 pots in 2 days and OH keeps falling over them, he thinks im a woman posessed!

just one more question... please, ive put about 4-5 sprouted poatoes in a big bag of compost, do i just leave them there all together now or will i have to replant them?

owow one more, can i just plant a clove of garlic and it will grow or did i just make that up xxx

Tayberry is a cane, long and sprawling the stems will be much longer and less woody than the currants. They wil need support as they grow. Couldn't tell a redcurrant from a blackcurrant but Google them and you should get a picture that may help. Alternatively just wait till they crop.

Cucumbers will grow much bigger than carrots, onions or broccoli. Once they grow a bit it will be really obvious what's what.

- Those little ones with leaves are 'Stuff'

exactly what i thought! well actually it was more like ," oh s**t" , ive still got loads to learn and think ive just jumped in head first! just been reading about cucumbers on here, i thought they grew underground i know its not funny is it! anyway least my baby girl isnt blonde !! thanks for your help guys will post pic in morning xx

cucumber - has really big leaves, about the size of your palm when they get full sized, but even the seed leaves are quite big.
carrots - start off with 2 thin leaves opposite each other, then get very fine, feathery leaves
onions - start off with very fine standing up leaves that look like grass to begin with, then thicken up to be more like upright green tubes
brocolli - start off with a pair of leaves opposite each other , like litttle heart shapes, then the next leaves come through looking a grey-ish green colour.

Once your potatoes are planted, you just leave them be, unless it's going to be frosty overnight, and then they need covering/wrapping so that the frost can't get to the leaves.
Strawberries should be fine outside, they are pretty tough

Couldn't tell a redcurrant from a blackcurrant

They look similar but the blackcurrant will smell distinctly if you run your hand over the leaves.

I always do the same with my cuc/marrow/squshes/cougs And forget whats in what pot ! so your not alone .As for the cress if you have alot try making a soup just use a watercress recipt its great even with normal cress . not sure about ruhbarb I cant stand the stuff reminds me of school dinners . strawberrys will be fine outside they are almost indestruckable.

Depends on the size of the bag, but they should be OK. Is the bag full, or do you have space to add more compost? See tattieman's excellent little video guide:

Yes you can - but get it in quick! Garlic needs a period of cold weather in order to tell it to split into cloves, otherwise you get one big fat bulb like a pickled onion (good for roasting whole, but not so useful if you just want a clove or two for your spag bol sauce!). You can grow it in pots if the ground isn't ready yet, but do put it outdoors.

P.S. It's a good idea to put your town or county name into your profile, so we know what the climate and weather is like in your part of the world. It can make a big difference when it comes to veg-growing!

Oh yeah, I forgot to say, if some of your plants are cucumbers, they shouldn't be outside overnight yet because a frost will kill them off. They would be happy enough on an indoor windowsill til it gets warmer.

Haha! I've done the exact same thing - I knew that I'd planted my seeds in this order basil, coriander, tomatoes, radishes - but then I mixed up the pots when I took them outside!

Shouldnt be too hard to figure it out when they sprout though.

I'm going to go to Starbucks in my break and make off with a load of wooden coffee stirrers to use as as labels..
