Early Peas

Hi in need of a bit of advice. When is it ok to plant out early peas? I am growing Meteor. I know they can be grown in the autumn but would it be ok to put them out after hardening off?

Or is it better to wait abit.

I put 75 early onwards into modules outdoors and some have germinated.

I've googled meteor peas and they are early peas so go for it.

my petit pois have been sown into paper tubes indoors. When they are about 4inches high I will start hardening them off and then plant outside.

I dont know if i have too many peas - I've got 20 for two obilisks!

Cheers, doing ok at the moment only had a few toms that haven't made it but really love peas so didn't want to take any chances.

i just looked at my packet, they say sow april to may ?? but i've sown some that hopefully will be going out sometime soon.

I know the feeling I have definately got too many peas but going to squeeze them in and hope for the best

I've just been out to check the soil and it's much too wet and covered in snow at the moment to do anything But I hope to sow my Meteor peas straight into the soil this weekend if it's dry enough. I've put a small plastic tunnel up where the row is going to be - hopefully that will help dry it out and warm it up a bit. I'm moon planting and this weekend is a good 'pea time' !

Oh thank you Comfreyfan. I had forgotten to check the calandar so will follow your advice and go and find plastic poly tunnel and leave for the weekend. Been a bit hit and miss with moon planting lately

Sowing Instructions
Ideal autumn sown for over-wintering but can be spring sown. Sow late October-November, or sow in March. Sow 5cm (2in) deep in flat bottomed drills spacing seeds about 2.5-5cm (1-2in) apart in rows about 60cm (2ft) apart.

I never sow peas or beans direct into the ground...

i like to sow my peas in a piece of guttering in the cold greenhouse and plant them out when it warms up a bit! still too cold and wet for my liking to sow outdoors

I did the guttering trick last year with another variety but my autumn sowing of this variety was eaten by the micers! I have grown them in loo rolls in cold greenhouse and they are about 3-4 inches tall now and wanted to move them on to put some other things in the greenhouse.

The weather here has not been too bad, had some rain and been abit cold at night. I think I may plant out a few at the weekend and see how they cope. I am going to do what comfreyfan suggested and put the placy tunnel up. If they aren't coping, will wait a week or so before I put out the rest.

I used to have problems with peas and beans disappearing - they just vanished from the ground - decided the problem was mice - can't understand it with the number of cats that use my veg garden But saw Carol Klein planting hers and putting holly over the top. So the last couple of years I've covered the planting area with holly and it works. I always give them some extra help with the little tunnel and they come on a treat.

Just to hijack this thread slightly...

Does anyone have any knowledge regarding Pea 'Klevedon Wonder', i fancy putting them in my new raised bed tomorrow, however i dont want to risk them being gotten at by the cold.

ill fleece them for a week or so if thats any help.

Just checked my packet of KW. It says they can be sown from March out doors, but to protect early sowings with cloches.

I have sown Hurst green shaft in the poly tunnel after starting them off in a heated greenhouse they are about 2” now and have held up really well to the recent frosts the thermometer read –1 for the last few nights and they look perky!
