Hi, planted some onion sets last autumn. Beds were flooded quite a lot. The onions are growing, but the original "little" onions appear to have rotted. Do you think they will grow ok? The shoots are green and growning!

Not sure I understand this. Sounds like they are fine if you have green shoots. The original sets (little onions) will throw out green shoots and the bases will swell with increasing day length. If they have rotted you won't get any growth at all. -
Hi, I know it sounds a bit double dutch! I was pleased to see healthy green gowth, but as I was weeding round, noticed that the set the growth had come from had gone soggy. Hopefully then, if they have good green growth they will swell!

Yes! I don't normally worry about sets so haven't looked to see what is happening under ground. Which bit exactly has gone soggy? I'm assuming it must be on the outside and the green growth is coming from the centre. Green growth is a good sign and I don't see why you won't get onions.Originally posted by Emmylou View PostComment

Is it the outer skin that has gone soggy?
I'm sure I read somewhere on this site that it is quite normal and to be expected.If a thing's worth doing, it's worth doing to excess

I know what you mean, i have the same problem in that i have nice healthy looking green shoots but the origional bulb is really soggy depite having thown out good shoots & roots - no idea if they are still viable or not though - sorry!Comment

I could be totally wrong here but I think I read that what happens is that the set stretches out long, then swells out over the growing season to become a spherical onion again. Mine look 'soggy' too but I'm hoping that they have merely stretched out thin and soon they will swell to award-winning size

Sometimes if you're very careful, to stop the rot you can take off the soggy surrounds. I never bother though and if the sun ever makes an appearance the dead surrounds will just shrivel up!

I was also concerned when I inadvertently dug one of mine up. The bulb felt papery soft.
Yet the shoots are as would seem normal. I popped it back in, scratching my head !!Comment

Thank goodness you asked this...I was convinced I'd "broken" mine as they are a bit soggy too! Good green growth though!If it ain't broke...fix it til it is!
