mushy peas

being a northener i should realy know this. but is there a specail type of pea you need to grow for mushy peas or is there any thing special you need to do with the peas once they have been picked

Marshalls do a pea called Maro which is a good marrowfat pea, and grown specifically for mushy peas although you can eat them fresh as well.

I find that any pea that you leave on too long can be left to dry and 'mushied'. I'm sure some do better than others though. You could buy some dried peas from the shops and save a few to plant.

One of the guys at the allotment just buys a pack of dried marrowfat peas for cooking and plants those! He seems to get canny crops an all!

OH and myself were talking about this a few weeks ago and she says that she's not seen packs of dried marrowfat peas in the shops for years. So who sells them??

I heard a funny story tonight - apparently Peter Mandelson had gone into a fish and chip shop (Hartlepool I think) and ordered fish and chips. He then said, "and some of that guacamole please". No idea if it's true or not, but made me chuckle!

thinking about it i havent seen any dried peas for sale either but then again i have not realy been looking as i tend to buy big bags of frozen mushy peas (sorry)

They do sell dried peas in the shops - I buy them regularly.

For my [in]famous pea soup - I use the Batchelors quick soak dried peas. They do marrowfat ones as well.

I shop in Co-op but our Sainsburys and Tescos also sell them - try the pulses section rather than the canned veg section.
