Hi Dexter - I'm tempted to reply they're normally yellow and you get them if you park illegally (sometimes even legally)
but I think they're like a mound of earth with straw inside where you put your potatoes to store them - but I'm probably wrong and someone will enlighten us

In olden days before we had freezers, various methods of storage were used
One of them was a potatoe 'clamp'. Basically a hole was dug...lined with straw..tatties were placed in hole...straw over top...soil on top of that, so the tatties were clamped. Wallah! I believe a small wisp of straw is left out of the top to allow it to breathe.
Stored in a frost free environment....but thats all I know, or think I know.!
Need a bit of enlightenment from someone who still uses this method of storage..thats all
Thought it might free up a bit of shed space

Tut Tut Snadger, no need to dig a hole.
1) Layer of straw
2) pile on the spuds
3) Cover with Straw
4) Dig a trench round the sides & use to cover the straw. - acts as a drainage channe; to keep tatties dry
5) You can either leave some straw sticking out or put a clay drainage pipe in stuffed loosley with straw
Well thats how my Dad used to do it.Last edited by nick the grief; 12-09-2006, 06:09 PM.
