Which potatoes?? (recommendations??)

Charlotte for salad/new potatoes - never let me down yet
Grew Cara for a maincrop this year for blight-resistance - good all round baker/roaster/masher but am tempted to try Kestrel this year as we had a slug-infestation that ruined a lot of the crop.

Tried Sarpo Mira one year but it made rubbish mash.... I was gutted...

Ah. I am now even more indecisive about which potato to grow than ever before.... So many potatoes, so little idea. I've now managed to make a list of a few 'possibles', with help from the ever indispensible folk on here (how did I manage without you all, fonts of knowledge and advice, humourous and kind?)

However, having mentioned a list, quite a lot depends on which varieties I will very kindly be given by a friend of a friend, who is a potato farmer and let me have some last year, so watch this space!

Last year I grew Swift (okay, but not rushing back to try again this year), Lady Crystal (sp?), okay but rather slugged, Anya (definately not doing again, as the slugs almost decimated them, tops an' all, and what survivived were too knobbly to make for quick cleaning!) and a 'mystery' potato which Tattieman kindly offered to try and identify but which stumped him. Sods law that this was the one spud which was fantastic, grew to a good size and hardly touched by the slugs.... ah, such is life I do have a small stash of these though, to use as seed this year.

Btw, Tattieman, if you are reading this, the name Gemstone filtered its way back to me as a possible variety, but I have Googled this to no success whatsoever, so perhaps it was a bit like chinese whispers? Have you ever heard of such a variety?

Last year I grew Arran Pilot, Royal Kidney and Harlequin.

Harlequin were definitely the winners. They are a cross between Charlotte and Pink Fir Apple - nice firm waxy spuds with plenty of flavour, and cropped well.

No I can't find any record of a Gemstone in any database.
It still annoys me that I can't figure out what that potato was
