  • Plants bolting

I have a winter planted crop of Onions, leeks & shallots.
They are all producing seed pods (bolting)
My Father used to say to cut the seed pods off ….. do I just just the pod off or the tem it is on as well.
Will plants continue to grow OK … is my crop ruined?

Cut the whole stem off, not just the pod. The bulbs will still swell a bit but won't store, so use those first. Leeks bolting is less common but same deal, just eat them up rather than trying to keep them.

So, just for garlic then? Although I suppose hard-neck garlic doesn't store as long as soft-neck garlic either.
Location:- Rugby, Warwckshire on Limy clay (within sight of the Cement factory)

it's why I dug my Extra Early Wight up weekend before last Mark, virtually all of them had bolted. Still got pretty good bulbs and they're hanging in the shed at the moment, approx 20 bulbs. We probably use two bulbs a week so, as you say, it doesn't matter too much that they're a hardneck variety as we wouldn't be able to store them more than a couple of months anyway.
        Are y'oroight booy?
