  • Heat-resistant varieties

I have tried to order more heat-resistant varieties after suffering disappointing results with my dwarf beans, potatoes and beetroots.
So do any of you have any experience growing Pongo dwarf beans, Globe 2 Detroit beetroot and Rosabelle and Prospere new potatoes?

I normally have no problem with beetroot. I have been successfully sowing Egypt seeds for several years but, it was a paltry harvest last year, despite mulching and covering with fleece. The same for my dwarf beans and the leeks I transplanted. On the question of leeks, a neighbour across the road planted his leeks closer together than normal and they seemed to thrive quite well (he obviously had access to tap well). The person next to our vegetable garden fills up our water tank several times during the season, in exchange for the land owner's permission to deposit his hedge cuttings and so on at one side of our garden. But it was impossible to keep on watering everything.

Anton here's a silly suggestion, but worth trying as there is no cost with trying it, you dig a trench and layer a good depth of shredded or scrunched up paper and cardboard, make sure it is well soaked then cover with soil, evidently different plants will need the cardboard/paper at different depths so that the roots can access any moisture, for peas you should dig a trench where you are going to grow them in late autumn and fill this over the winter with vegetative kitchen waste, what we used to do was drop some tin cans in with it aswell which woud catch water and act as a reservoir for the plants, if you have a compost bin or heap, you could put any lumpy material into a trench for this year.

it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

Fleecing your beetroot will make matters worse, not better. Fleece traps the heat. If you want to shade them a bit, shade netting is what you want.

We hit the mid-40s in summer, with no rain for weeks on end, where I live. And leeks are one thing I can absolutely be sure of harvesting. Heat isn't a big issue for them, I reckon. But what you can't do with leeks is water them little and often, as the roots are so deep. Even in my conditions, I water them every few days, but give them a really good soaking in the late evening or early morning.

I grow leeks multisown, like Charles Dowding, in clusters of three or four, though sometimes five sneak through. Spacing around 25 cm between clusters. Threes and fours can get quite sizeable. Here's my user photo, a bit bigger so you can see it properly. Not sure what variety these are, probably Chef's White though. Not the same variety in the other photo and absolutely no idea what they are.

Thanks for these suggestions. I transplant leeks I purchase on the local market not sow them.

P.S. I changed my user settings to notifications every day but I did not receive any notifications about these new posts!

            Hi Anton

Try selecting 'On' for Email notifications - rather than designating daily or weekly - and ticking both 'Replies to your discussion (this also includes comments in your topics)' and 'Comments on your discussion'.

If that doesn't work or is what you've already done then do let me know & I'll get one of our more experienced Mods on the case

Did you remember to tick 'Replies to your discussion (this also includes comments in your topics)' and 'Comments on your discussion' too?

I've asked the other Mods for advice & it was suggested to check the emails aren't going into your junk/spam folder if you haven't done so already.

Yes, I've done all that and nothing in my junk/spam folder. Not to worry, I'll have to remember to keep checking back.

                        Hi Anton

Peanut has put in a request with the GYO IT elves to see if they can tweak whatever needs tweaking for you to receive email notifications. Unfortunately us mere Mods aren't able to access those settings & we have no control over when it might be actioned but the request has been made
