Hi Folks, New to the forum. I have a crop of Desiree in my shed (appx 35kg) in 2 x chicken feed paper bags. I have been away for 3 weeks and on return i have Mickey and co who have decimated the wild bird food and then also got into the spud bags. The stench is horrific and droppings everywhere. I pan to gut the shed and poison is already deployed.. Some of the spuds are chewed and i have discarded about 30%. I have washed the remained with tap water and am leaving a select few bigger ones to dry in the green house over the next couple of days I intend to use the remainder as seed. Can i keep the "saved" potatoes for cooking? I love Desiree mash :-( Thanks in advance Steve.

I used to have problems with mice eating my potatoes in the shed. I still used the partially chewed ones. Just wash them well and cut out the bits with tooth marks. You're going to be cooking them, anyway, so that should kill off anything that might remain.
In the end I decided to mouse-proof my potato storage solutions. I bought an old metal filling cabinet for £10 and put that in the shed to store my potatoes in. No mice are getting into that.Last edited by ameno; 19-10-2025, 02:38 PM.

Thanks Ameno, i went shopping today with the wife and DID NOT buy spuds knowing that i would be roasting some of the Desiree. Shock / horror just before my post to find the disaster. now having to use some packet Gratin spuds with roast beef. Hey ho. I was going to just wash and not tell the wife but thought it best to keep her on the loop at which point she "politely" declined. I will however use the "saved" ones as i thought cooking would be fine.
Never had mice in the shed before (20 years) so this is a first and hopefully last once I've gutted it. Should see more of me on the forum as I've just retired and will become a full time home grown veggy producer on my megre plot. I shall be digging out my John Seymour books.

Thank you.Originally posted by greenishfing View PostHi, just wanted to say welcome.
I am the wrong person to answer this question as I am absolutely phobic about mice and their larger cousins.
I cannot bear to touch anything that they have been near. However, I'm sure somebody with a more normal view of the critters will be along shortly.

Hello and welcome to the Vine, I'm doing this now!
I see you've had a number of replies, but I'm afraid I'm going to close this thread on the grounds that I'm not aware of any Vine members qualified to give expert advice on this subject. When it comes to health, we mods, like your wife, prefer to err on the side of caution.
No terminator category of members, I'm afraid. But if you post plenty, you do eventually get to choose your own member status. But we're talking a lot of posts... currently it stands at 20,000 posts. But that should be "no problemo".
