  • Long Sweet Pepper Recommendations

OH has decided he'd like us to try growing Sweet Peppers next year - specifying the 'long' type (rather than standard bell peppers).

We'd be growing in large pots against the house wall - south facing. We've no proper greenhouse but could (& probably will) put them in the blow-away.

Any recommendations for a type that fits his spec?

I've had good results from Amy and Elephant Ear.
And if you don't mind a mildly spicy sweet pepper, Beaver Dam, Ostry, and Mulato Isleno are all very good. Although the latter is quite late ripening. Beaver Dam, on the other hand, ripens very early.

I have grown Hungarian hot wax over the years. I start them off in early Februry in a propogator and pot them on into large pots in the greenhouse. If you harvest thrm when they are yellow they are sweet rather then hot...If you leave them to go orange or red thy will be a little hotter. I alway get a good crop from this variety.

I've grown long peppers, I think they were called Bull's Horn or similar. The flesh wasn't very thick and they grew to about 9 inches in length. Good for stuffing but not fleshy enough to use as an ingredient in, say, salads, fajitas etc.
        Are y'oroight booy?

I recommend Astor sweet peppers & long red Marconi both very good grown outside here. A bell pepper that’s very good is mavras,it’s the best one I've grown for thickness of walls. Are they called walls, you know what I mean

I think my favourite have been Corno di Toro peppers. Crunchy, Good flavour and heavy cropper.
I possibly have hotter summers than most of you which , of course, may be why they did so well outside.
