  • Beetroot Varieties - suggestions?!

I love beetroot, roasted, pickled or made into beetroot and chocolate cake (not as weird as it sounds!)

Unfortunately, the last couple of years my usually pretty reliable Bolthardy hasn't produced great crops, either being small and mis-shapen, not germinating or generally being pretty poor. Very hit and miss, requiring lots of resowing.

Has anyone got any suggestions for other reliable cropping, good traditional tasting and easy to grow varieties (and suppliers?).

Any personal recommendations would be much appreciated! Thank you!

Pablo is always very reliable for me. Always swells well, produces some very large roots if left long enough, without going woody. Doesn't need thinning as much as old varieties like Boltardy, either.

I have similar issues with Boltardy and will try Pablo as an alternative next year. I very much like the yellow variety Boldor, which I find performs well and is sweeter than the red varieties.

I always used to grow cylindra. It never seemed to bolt as far as I recall.
It was so easy to chop into even slices to fit into preserving jars.

Rainbow mix are fun, avaiable from Premier Seeds. You get normal purple ones, chioggia ones with concentric purple and white circles, golden ones and white ones which are the sweetest of all (I have often wondered if they're in fact some sort of mini sugar beet !! )

I love beetroot too! This year I am growing boltardy, cylindra, chioggia, a white albina? And funky disco mix.
