  • Stunted growth french beans

I have never got on with French beans and no different here. Why after potting on a shop bought plant has it stopped growing. In fact it is getting smaller ?

That's not one plant; it's three or four. That pot is far too small. The compost may well be lacking in nutrients, too.

Did you add fertilizer to the compost, Marb? That looks like over fertilization to me. Too much fertilizer is poison just as surely as weedkiller.

      Endless wonder.

I may have dusted lightly with Q4 and then feed once a week with Tomorite. It was in a far smaller pot when I purchased it and it hasn't grown any more so I don't think it's too small.

That doesn't mean anything. The problem right now isn't outward space, it's space between the plants. They are too close together and competing too much. They were probably already at their limit when you repotted them.

Garden centre's often sell veg plants in groups in small pots, but you are meant to split them up in order to grow them on.
Its not too late for you to do that. When I grow them in pots I put 3 or 4 in a 50cm pot, I also add manure as it helps to stop them drying out too quickly.

Thanks,ii genuinely didn't realise. I potted it on into a larger pot with manure added but will pot it into an even bigger one now split apart irf it isn't too late.

There’s no harm in trying that Marb.
But do remove the purple pods before you do so. They will need to to concentrate on laying down roots to start with.

Ok, potted on into large pot, spaced apart, beans removed, fed with tomorite and still the plant is deteriorating.

When did you transplant it, Marb? It might struggle with root shock or some other shock on being transplanted and so take a while to recover.

I transplanted this weekend. In that case I'll keep hoping for the best. Thanks.

Well, after taking advice here, 2 plants have died and the remaining is getting smaller and smaller. It doesn't make sense !

And why again when I upload an image to post do I get the message "Please upload at least one photo." ?

                            Sympathy like there, Marb.

As for the photo issue: can you tell me about the devices you use to post photos. Is it always the same device? And what is the file format you're trying to upload? Do you have the same problem every time you try and post a photo or only sometimes? The Vine software is quite old now and doesn't recognise some of the new formats used by Apple, for example.

I don't understand why you seem to have such a bad time with plants dying, it must be so frustrating and annoying, I really do feel for you.

All I can suggest or think of are things like...
What compost/mix are you growing in?
Is there any stem damage where something may be eating it?
How wet or dry is the compost, are they drying out or rotting in wet compost?
Is there damage to the roots, a lack of roots?

I just can't think of any single thing from looking at the photos Marbs, but as this happens so often to so many different kinds of plants, there must be some kind of common denominator.

I am completely baffled, sorry I can't offer any help.
