Today I've moved my Blauhilde climbing beans into the cold frame hopefully the slugs won't eat them all.

My sympathies ChingfordHarry - I've been there in the past & it's so frustrating! We start everything in trays/pots now to have a fighting chance.
Location: SE Wales about 1250ft up

Sowed my French beans and Runners direct today.

I gave up growing them in root trainers, doing the hokey cokey for a couple of weeks, getting nice little plants, only for them to be shredded by wind.

So I now plant direct towards the end of May and they're fine. I think if they begin their life where they will grow they seem to acclimatise better and grow better.
        Are y'oroight booy?

I wish I could sow mine direct. Between my french and runner beans, I grow some 80 or so plants, so sowing direct would be so much easier. But sadly I get a lot of bean fly where I am, so any beans (or peas) sown direct never come up, as the bean fly maggots eat them. I need to start them all off indoors for their protection. I don't bother with root trainers, though. I just use module trays (the 15 cell ones).
