  • mistery seedlings ID 🧐

Hello everyone! When the cats came and dug up my plants in my raised beds to go to the toilet, I planted some more seeds after cleaning up, and as a true beginner, I didn't write down what I sown. Can anyone identify what plants they are(the bigger ones)? I think I tried parsnips. Could this be that? I wouldn't be confident those are parsnips - mine tend to have more of a jagged edge to the leaves. You could perhaps try picking one of the leaves then crushing it and giving it a sniff. Parsnip leaves smell to me like parsley - if parsley smelt stronger and was dirty.

They look a bit like radish? Did you do a line of radish to show where the parsnip will appear 🧐☺️

No clue! 😂 Tomorrow or on the next day I will check and follow Andraste's advice and see what they smell like 😁 I know I planted lettuce too but in my note I just wrote "sown variety of seeds" 🙈🙈

ahhhh - hindsight's 20-20 and all that lol. We've all done it.

I've tried to train myself to a routine of writing labels before I sow - which you've motivated me to do now as there's no way I'm going to tell the difference between 2 different types of cabbage and some cauli's I've promised to sow later

I agree, the larger ones look like radish to me.

Of the small ones at the bottom, the round-leafed ones look like lettuce.

maybe this is a dumb question but.. how do I know when they're ready to be harvested? I might try to take one out tomorrow to see how big they are

You need to have a rough idea how long they'll take. Radishes take roughly four weeks. From the number of leaves, I'd say yours aren't ready yet.

There's no harm in pulling one up to have a look at how they're doing but I'd follow snoop's advice & wait until after the 4 week point.

Whenever I've grown radish they seem to take longer than that (no idea why - me/the variety etc.). I tend to wait until I can see the top of the radish above ground as that can be a bit of a sign they're getting a pickable size.

I agree that the bigger seedlings look like radish or possibly turnip. They are definitely brassicas (cabbage family) - the seed leaves are very distinctive. Parsnips are carrot family and have long narrow seed leaves. The smaller seedlings do look like lettuce, although there is one at the front of the picture that could be a parsnip (or possibly spinach) that has a long narrow leaf.

Parsnips can take a long time to germinate, so more could come up later.
