  • Asparagus In A Raised Bed

    How many asparagus crowns could I fit into a 2m x 1m?

I'm pondering purchasing some crowns but not sure if its worth it for a small raised bed? I could put them in a longer bed but I'm not sure I want to give up a 4m long bed for them.

    Hi penut,

RHS recommends 45cm spacing - seems like loads but they don't like disturbing & will be in their spot for a long time.

If you do them sort of staggered I reckon you'd fit in around 5 or 6 in a 2x1m bed but that's just a guess not a calculated figure).

If you are happy to buy and plant more, say 10 in the 2x1 area, the higher density will yield more in the early years and you can remove any weak ones in later years

I've got 10 in a 3 x 1 metre bed. I grew the plants from seed originally about 15 years ago. For the last 7 or 8 years they have given us plenty for two people.
